Russia was cold but not as cold as any midwestern city in the winter time. As I’m flying now from Russia to Germany, before heading back to the United States 🇺🇸, I am reminded of the poem Johnny Cash wrote, Ragged Old Flag.

You recognize the the freedoms you enjoy when suddenly you no longer have them. Even something as little as being able to browse a popular business website because the government decided to block its access. I sure do enjoy the travel but the best feeling is when I re-enter the United States and hear our immigration officer say, “welcome home, Mr. Chapa”.

Sure does bring a deeper meaning to that poem, too.

I’m headed to Russia for a work trip. Some of my posts my come at odd hours for those in the states, regular hours for those near that time zone. 🙂

Before I leave the States, I wanted to say, THANK YOU, to all the followers of He Wore Black. I see the new likes come in, and believe me, it doesn’t go unnoticed. I’m grateful for each and every one of you who have decided to join me on this journey. To say that I’m a Johnny Cash fan, myself, would be an understatement.

I hope the research I’ve done and the knowledge I share about Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three will be of interest to you too.

I hope I can do a show near you...I am planning a He Wore Black, unplugged version of the bigger show. I’ll keep you all posted, if you’d be interested.

I appreciate you all!

Thanks

Photos from He Wore Black's post

On this day (January 13) in 1968, Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three (Marshall Grant, Luther Perkins, and WS Holland), backed by Carl Perkins, The Statler Brothers - Country Legends, and of course June Carter (she was not June Carter Cash yet), performed once again at Folsom State Prison, but this time it was being recorded for a live album. They all arrived a couple days early to rehearse for two days prior to the concert, which was not common for the group. When I spent time with WS Holland back in November 2017 at his home in Jackson, he said they usually didn’t even know what song John would play. This was different, this was going to potentially alter the trajectory of Cash’s career. In particular, they were rehearsing Glen Shirley’s song, Greystone Chapel, a song Shirley (an inmate in Folsom) wrote and delivered to Cash via Rev. Gressett, Cash’s friend and pastor of Avenue Community Church in Ventura, CA, where Cash would attend church.

On the day of the concert, ... See more

I want to thank the local businesses that hung my posters in their establishments or helped me get the word out about He Wore Black.

Heygidday (GREAT company, great people. Check them out, just about anything you need from promotional items, patches, t-shirts, biker gear, vinyl work (t-shirts, windows, cars, you name it), etc. They are AWESOME!!)

I posted this on my personal page, but thought I should share it here, too.

January 8, 2018

Today would have been my mother’s 80th Birthday, Elvis’ 83rd Birthday, and Luther Perkins’ 90th Birthday. As I was reflecting about my mom and her influence on me with country music I thought about times when I listened to Johnny Cash, and about the history that I know about Cash, his band, friends, etc. Anyway, this is what I posted.

———

Fire seems to be a recurring theme for Johnny Cash.

1. His famous song, Ring of Fire, written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore

2. Sadly, Luther Perkins passed away in a fire (today would have been his 90th birthday. RIP)

3. Marshall Grant was fired in the 80s (okay a play on words)

4. Johnny's house was taken by fire (Barry Gibb, owner)

5. Cowboy Jack Clement (Cash's longtime friend, producer, songwriter) had a treasure trove of unreleased recordings in his house that was ultimately consumed by fire.

6. WS Holland is still on fire, ... See more

He Wore Black, a Tribute to Johnny Cash | Shining Light Events, Inc.

Many have asked if tickets will be available at the door.

We will make them available at the door, but the cost will be $30/person for general admission only. No family discounts, or VIP packages available at the door.

Another thing to keep in mind, when we are sold out, we are sold out. So, keep an eye on our Facebook Page or our website for information on when that happens.

Your best bet is to buy them at www.shininglightevents.com/He-Wore-Black and ensure you get a seat.

As we begin to sunset the year 2017, I want to take time to wish you all a very safe and happy new year. And to thank you for making 2017 a great year for me as I embarked on this journey to create He Wore Black, a Johnny Cash Tribute show. I've not stepped out this far in my life, but with the encouragement of all of you, and especially my wife and family, a dream I dreamt is coming true.

Special thanks to WS Holland, and especially, Ron Haney for helping to coordinate getting both of them here in Colorado for the show.

May 2018 be the year you decide to change the world, find your passion, follow your dream, spend time with your family, share your life, do something small or something big. Whatever it may be, may you and your family be blessed in this new year, and may we always look for the blessings, even when things don't go just the way we would like.

Happy New Year and God Bless you all.
